Recently, Bloomberg pointed out that home improvement spending has increased in recent years. The magazine took a survey of the most common improvements or renovation projects made to a home, and garage repairs and carports fall within the list.
So, according to Bloomberg, the average cost of constructing or improving a garage is $13,059 on average. Total cost, however, varies with location. Those in the South can expect to spend about $10,000, while projects more northward are priced around $15,000 on average. Additionally, Bloomberg points out, married couples are more likely (about 30-percent more) to renovate their garage or carport than singles.
Nevertheless, what Bloomberg fails to point out is the disparity of garage construction and carport projects. The former typically entails purchasing materials, drawing up blueprints, and hiring labor, while the latter can be constructed even by the most average do-it-yourselfer. Just how big of a difference in price is there? For a large metal carport through retailer Carport Depot, the price runs up to $5,000 — and that’s for all essentials. 30×20 round portable garages are under $7,000.
Constructing a garage on your own isn’t solely possible through carport kits. Garage kits are an option, as well. Such kits, which are essentially pole barns, include all wood and metal components, blueprints, and supplies for installation.
Bloomberg went on to point out other possible home improvement projects. What other options do you have? Energy-efficient replacement windows and doors reduce heating costs inside a home. Low-E glass, combined with a custom-fit design, prevents air from escaping in the winter and retains it in the summer. Siding and roofing, often services offered by the same company, are additional options for keeping the exterior and interior of a home in good condition.
