Pop-up canopies are popular shelters used for shade in summer. If you own a canopy, here are some suggestions for keeping it in good condition.

Summer is less than a month away, and warmer weather calls for more shade. A pop-up canopy is one of the most efficient products for having shade. Rather than relying on trees, an umbrella, or an awning, set up one of these lightweight structures anywhere on your property, at the beach, or at any outdoor event and anchor them in place. Pop-up canopies typically have a one-piece design that folds out; larger party tents are in pieces but don’t take long to be put together. If you own a pop-up canopy or plan to purchase one, how do you keep your shelter in good condition for this summer and more to come?

A pop-up canopy is made out of a powder-coated steel frame and a polyester top treated to be waterproof and UV resistant. The shelter, however, should not permanently be kept outdoors. Powder-coated steel will eventually rust, and the lifespan of your canopy will be cut short. Nevertheless, the uses for this simple shelter are many. Set one up in your backyard as shelter for yourself or others, or fold it up and take it to a neighbor’s for a party. A carrying bag accompanies most pop-up canopies, and the folded canopy just needs to be placed in the bag and can be taken to any location.

Once you are finished using the canopy, make sure to fold it back up, place it in the bag, and take it inside or back home. Leaving pop-up canopies behind, however, has become a problem on beaches, especially as these shelters are relatively inexpensive. Nevertheless, canopies left behind become litter, especially if they end up in the ocean. If you plan to take a pop-up canopy to the beach or any other location, never leave it behind and, as soon as you are about to go, fold it up, place it in the carrying bag, and take it with you.

Canopies, such as pop-up canopies and party tents, are a common sight at many fairs adn festivals, and this includes the Taste of Wallingford in Connecticut.

Canopies, especially the pop-up tent kind, are seen at many outdoor events. This includes a recent fair in Wallingford, CT called the Taste of Wallingford. The festival, an outdoor event in which restaurants in the central Connecticut town gathered to give locals a taste of their food selections, was during a fairly warm day in October, but even then, canopies are needed for shade for the people and the food being sold. Below are some pictures taken at the Taste of Wallingford. Notice the variety of canopy structure being used, from small to large pop-up tents to tents with polyethylene sidewalls and insect netting.

Most of these structures are of the aluminum frame and polyester canopy variety. This includes the larger canopy structures which, in many cases, are called wedding tents. Although wedding tents can sometimes have a square formation, these are more rectangular, with poles in the center holding up the structure. In general, these types of canopies are appropriate for the event, as each can be put up and taken down quickly and will protect those under from the sun. The canopy material, whether polyester or polyethylene, is treated to be UV resistant, or at least reduce UV rays, and waterproof, in case of rain. Although the Taste of Wallingford wasn’t hit with rain that day, the vendors were prepared with the appropriate structures for any inclement weather.

Pop-up canopies are often used in the backyard, and these canopies can be set up and taken down for holidays like Labor Day.

Labor Day just passed, and one common aspect for this holiday is outdoor cookouts and get-togethers in the backyard. As a result, many backyard parties use pop-up canopies for their celebrations. These canopies can be used as a shelter for people needing shade, or, more specifically, they can be a covering for a table with plates of food for the afternoon or the evening. Regardless of how you use your canopies, all of these structures are referred to as pop-up canopies, EZ-up canopies, or party tents. Each of these structures is composed of a steel frame, typically powder coated steel to protect it from the elements, and a canopy made of polyester or medium-duty polyethylene.

Although Labor Day is over, the fall season is still warm enough for some backyard parties. When setting up one of these party tents for a get-together in your backyard, the structure is typically one or two pieces. With pop-up tents, the canopy may be attached to the metal frame, which folds out and upward in one piece. One of these tents can be set up by yourself or with a group of people. Once the tent is folded out, additional support for it during the party can be done with small metal anchors. These attach to the legs of the canopy and can be driven into the ground to keep the canopy firmly in place.

If you don’t already have a party tent (or know someone who owns one), one of these structures can be purchased through any canopy supplier. In addition, these structures can be modified by plastic walls or mosquito netting in case of insects. These walls or netting can be attached to the sides of the canopy and, in case you no longer need to use them, the material can be taken down or tied to the posts of the party tent.

Leaving a steel canopy frame on the beach is considered littering, but around Tampa Bay, this has become a common problem.

Apparently, leaving canopies on the beach is an issue around Tampa, according to Florida newspaper The Beach Beacon. But, according to this article, it’s not the polyethylene or polyester canopies that are being left behind but, instead, the steel frame of the canopies. As a result, the frame is washing up and getting caught between the erosion and coastal construction lines, as these public beaches, like several in Florida, have received some coastal reconstruction to reduce erosion damage. What type of threat do metal steel canopies pose for the environment? Although a canopy or tarp, theoretically, may tear and, like plastic bags, may have animals getting caught in it or attempting to consume it, the metal structure is simply litter.

If the steel structure of a canopy is left on the beach and goes out to sea, the metal will eventually rust. Although not as harmful to marine life as plastic or Styrofoam items, anything that is litter going out into the ocean may harm marine life – and steel components may be harmful to larger marine creature. If you don’t know about how harmful litter of all types is to the ocean, Green Eco Services has a page detailing the effects of litter on marine creatures.

If you’re a beach goer, what can you do to prevent beach litter? The first thing is to take your canopy home. Most steel pop-up canopies are easy to transport and take in a car, so when packing up your things, remember to bring both the canopy and steel structure. If you see others leaving their steel canopies on the beach – but taking everything else with them – remind them about the canopy they’re leaving behind or, if the canopy is already abandoned, contact any local authorities to report the abandoned canopy. Although a steel canopy frame may be alone on the beach, the tide may rise and drag it out to sea.

Canopy client CanopyHut has added additional Shelterlogic products, such as permanent canopies and pop up shelters, to its website.

As we manage several clients that sell a combination of tarps and canopy structures, it only seems natural that nearly all would carry some combination of these products. This client of ours, Canopy Hut, recently expanded its products in terms of structures. Generally, a canopy website has a blend of both permanent outdoor shelters like portable garages and pop-up canopies, such as EZ-up canopies, party tents, and wedding tents. Canopy Hut expanded its offerings in both of these areas, including adding such additional permanent structures like RV and boat canopies and other pop-up structures like trade show canopies.

For permanent outdoor canopies, what is the difference between a portable garage and an RV or boat shelter? Typically, it’s the size and the selection on Canopy Hut’s new product pages reflects this. The shelters on the boat canopy page can cover at least one boat, while the RV shelters are all long canopy structures with walls designed to cover at least one RV. The larger RV shelters are both wide and long to hold two RVs. In addition, other permanent outdoor shelters Canopy Hut now carries include car canopies, which are enclosed or open carports for one or more cars to fit under in all kinds of weather. All of these permanent outdoor canopies are by Shelterlogic.

The other new products now offered by Canopy Hut are temporary shelters that can be set up outdoors with ease. These shelters are called party tents, pop-up canopies, or wedding tents depending on the size – wedding tents are typically the largest of this kind – and Canopy Hut now has trade show canopies. If you’re planning on attending a trade show outdoors with many items to protect, one of these canopy structures can be folded up in your car and can be set up quickly once at the trade show. As this canopy is only for temporary use, it is designed to be taken out, put up, and transported with ease.

A pop-up tent is an easy-to-set-up structure for temporary protection, and pop-up canopies, or EZ up canopies, can be used at a flea market and other locations.

When an outdoor flea market is put together, the event could be canceled because of rain. But if the flea market is rain or shine, you will need to protect the items you’re selling, be it clothes, furniture, books, or assorted small items. For some items, such as dishes, the rain won’t be as detrimental as it is to clothes or furniture, which could become soaked and warp the wood and bleed the fabric.

A canopy, particularly a pop-up or EZ up canopy, can be stored easily and quickly opened to protect your investments. A pop-up canopy is small enough to be kept in the back of a car or at a flea market booth and then assembled in case of an emergency. The primary benefit of a pop-up canopy is that it needs only one person to assemble it. As pop-up canopies are fairly common quick shelters, you might even have one at home that you have used for a backyard party or a family event at a beach. If not, most canopy dealers carry several types of pop-up canopies.

A pop-up canopy is constructed of an aluminum frame and a polyester or vinyl canopy. The roof is usually peaked for the rain to run off. In terms of setting up a pop-up canopy, no additional tools or parts are needed. While a permanent canopy like a portable garage will need to stay in place for months at a time, a pop-up canopy simply needs to go up and come down in a day. However, when setting up a pop-up canopy at a flea market, particularly if the flea market is set up on blacktop or asphalt, additional sandbags will be needed to keep the canopy in place. But if the flea market is outdoors on a dirt field, the pop-up canopy won’t need to be held in place with sandbags.
